The Client: The Winchester Lodge
Tucked away in Fredericksburg, Texas, The Winchester Lodge is a 16-suite boutique hotel that blends rustic charm with warm hospitality. The team envisioned a mural that would capture the beauty of the Texas Hill Country across all four seasons—an interactive, photo-worthy experience for guests.
The Project: A Mural That Moves Through Time
Inspired by my past work at Stonewall Motor Lodge, the lodge’s team wanted a mural that celebrated Fredericksburg’s German heritage, rolling landscapes, and timeless charm. The challenge? Creating a seamless transition through spring, summer, fall, and winter in a way that felt organic, inviting, and memorable.
The Process: From Blank Walls to a Living Landscape
I arrived at The Winchester Lodge early one morning, welcomed with the kind of Texas hospitality that makes small towns special. Over the next four days, I transformed the lodge’s covered patio into a sweeping Hill Country scene.
I prepped the surface with Behr mildew-resistant primer to ensure durability. Instead of using a projector, I freehanded the entire design, allowing the natural flow of the landscape to guide the composition. Using Behr exterior enamels, Mack Tidwell brushes, and a mix of splatter techniques, I layered vibrant colors to create depth and movement.
Each season came to life with distinct details: bluebonnets for spring, golden prairies for summer, burnt-orange vineyards for fall, and twinkling Christmas lights for winter. The Winchester Lodge logo anchored the mural against a glowing Texas sunset.
The Final: More Than a Mural
Before the last brushstrokes even dried, guests were already taking photos— a sign that the artwork was doing exactly what it was meant to do: create connection, conversation, and lasting memories.
I’m grateful to The Winchester Lodge team for their kindness and vision. Their dedication to guest experience is reflected in every corner of the property, including this mural, which now serves as a backdrop for stories and a landmark for visitors.
If you’re ever in Fredericksburg, stop by, snap a photo, and experience the Hill Country through every season.
“When it came time to reimagine our gazebo space at The Winchester Lodge, we wanted to create something truly special. Having worked with Kate on a past project at Stonewall Motor Lodge, we immediately thought of her for this commission. The result is even more stunning than we imagined—an incredible, vibrant mural that perfectly captures the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. We are thrilled to see our guests interacting with it and look forward to the stories it will become a part of. Thank you, Kate!” - From The Winchester Lodge Management Team
